14  And I said unto him: What am I that I should tempt God to show unto thee a sign in the thing which thou knowest to be true? Yet thou wilt deny it, because thou art of the ^cdevil. Nevertheless, not my will be done; but if God shall smite thee, let that be a sign unto thee that he has power, both in heaven and in earth; and also, that Christ shall come. And thy will, O Lord, be done, and not mine.

  9  And our spirits must have become like unto him, and we become devils, angels to a devil, to be shut out from the presence of our God, and to remain with the father of lies, in misery, like unto himself; yea, to that being who beguiled our first parents, who ^gtransformeth himself nigh unto an angel of light, and stirreth up the children of men unto secret combinations of murder and all manner of secret works of darkness.

  14  And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

  4  The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is ^bnot in all his thoughts.

  28  Yea, they durst not make use of that which is their own lest they should offend their priests, who do yoke them according to their desires, and have brought them to believe, by their traditions and their dreams and their whims and their visions and their pretended mysteries, that they should, if they did not do according to their words, offend some unknown being, who they say is God—a being who never has been seen or known, who ^bnever was nor ever will be.

  4  And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, ^bThese be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

  18  And he spake plainly unto them, that he had been ^adeceived by the power of the devil. And he spake of hell, and of eternity, and of eternal punishment.

  18  That it is ^anot reasonable that such a being as a Christ shall come; if so, and he be the Son of God, the Father of heaven and of earth, as it has been spoken, why will he not show himself unto us as well as unto them who shall be at Jerusalem?

  9  And behold, I am Giddianhi; and I am the governor of this the secret society of Gadianton; which society and the works thereof I know to be ^cgood; and they are of ancient date and they have been handed down unto us.
